Day 2 - Cologne
Day 2 - 20th May
Neil had booked a 2 hr walking tour but first it was a climb of 533 steps for our view of Cologne from the top of the massive cathedral.
Just after 12 we met Izzy our local guide who is part time musician and tour guide. These ‘free tours’ are always led by ‘characters’ and this one was no exception punctuating the history of Cologne with jokes and local anecdotes.

| Our tour with Izzy was the best - we had beer! |
For just over two hours we gazed at churches , Roman remains (in a modern carpark) were shown a statue to commemorate the 1969 moon landing which NASA refuses to acknowledge and a building covered in statues to historical notaries including a very rude one to the man who introduced taxes to Cologne.

Unlike the traditional view of German beer being served in litre steins, in Cologne it is served in 200cl stanges. The kobis (beer waiter) will keep replacing your stange until you put a beermat on top your glass. Cologne beer, Kölsch, must be brewed within sight of the cathedral. The purported kölsch brewery in Scotland with a live feed of the cathedral stretched the truth a little far.
After sampling a few recommended local beers and eating some hearty food it was time for a rest .

Sounds like the one about the Japanese building a town called Scotland, just so the local whisky factory could put "Made in Scotland" on its bottles.
ReplyDeleteLovely images, and thanks for the tip re: beer mats. Hope you continue to enjoy your adventure!
