Day 24: Bregenz

 Thursday 4th July

Our home exchange partner, Franz has suggested a couple of walks for us to do. One of them starts from the house and then heads up the mountain behind before continuing along a broad ridge to the north. We decided to do a variation and took the cable car, 3 minutes away from the house, up the Pfander, so that when we started our walk we had already gained 1000m.

Our well sign-posted route took us past numerous farms, through lush pastures

gave us an opportunity to meet the local inhabitants.

Many of the farms were selling their produce, either by honesty boxes or through vending machines which accepted payment cards. Some of the latter were quite high tech, having fridges and freezers and selling a whole range of things - cheese, yogurt, sausages, meat, ice cream, milk etc.

They didn’t look anything like the poor hill farms in Wales.

We walked down from the mountain past more farms

and through a series of woods

until we got to the village of Lochau, where we caught a bus back to Bregenz.

We want to have an early night as we anticipate getting up later to see if the UK has a brighter future.

I hope we haven’t started celebrating prematurely!
