Day 29: Bregenz to Andermatt

Tuesday 9th July

Bregenz to Andermatt

After the eleven mile walk yesterday we slept pretty well. By eleven packing up and cleaning complete, it was time for a group photo before heading to the station.

Our journey retraced the route to Chur where we boarded the Glacier express. This famous train features panoramic dining cars with stunning views.

The climb to over 2000 metres to reach the Oberalp pass takes over an hour.

Luckily we had selected a bright sunny day and the snowy mountain tops and verdant valleys were looking their best.

A late lunch was served at our table .

We got chatting to a couple of Chinese young men. One is studying at Imperial College.

The train continued onto Brig but we had opted to disembark at Andermatt to break the journey. I remarked later that its route winding up or down the mountain looks like one of the trains on a model layout disappearing as it enters tunnels only to emerge a few minutes later chugging slowly onward.

After checking into our hotel we did a walk above the town.

The wild flowers were particularly beautiful. Multi coloured lupins, harebells, flowering thyme, purple orchids and more adorned the hillside.

We met some cyclists taking advantage of the bbq and wood provided just off the road.

Another couple were picnicking near the church. All in all a bucolic scene.
